About Us
What we do

Yellow Movement, initiated by students and a lecturer at the School of Law of Addis Ababa University in 2011, aims to foster continuous discussions on violence against women (VAW) and empower women and girls through capacity building. Even though student-led clubs are common in many higher education institutions, this initiative is the first of its kind in the country. Their objectives include encouraging students to take responsibility for positive change on their campus, city, and nation, raising awareness for the protection of girls’ and young women’s rights, and providing financial support to female students in need. The initiative is inspired by the belief that impactful social changes often start with a committed, small group of people and that time and passion are crucial resources for this work. At the Yellow Movement, we prioritize these resources to drive positive change.
Mission and Vision

Founding Story
The Yellow Movement (YM) was founded in 2011, triggered by the gruesome attack on Aberash Hailay and the violence against women observed in our community. The movement was set up at Addis Ababa University by a law lecturer and law students to take responsibility for the changes they want to see in their community. When it started, members of the YM wanted to advocate for the removal of victim blaming by saying, “Zero Tolerance to Violence.”. The Yellows believed that small actions by small groups of people could bring big change, which was the driving factor behind the movement.
Goal: The YM aims to conduct advocacy and educate members of their community about gender inequality and Gender-Based violence. It aimed to drive collective action by the university community to bring equality. The thematic engagements and activities have changed, but the goal remains the same creating an equal and safe world for women and girls.

Why the Color Yellow?
It is bright, hopeful, it is the color of the sun and it draws attention. We want people to notice us and to ask questions as we campaign on campus, and we want them to feel inspired and imagine a better future for women as they talk to us. That is why we chose Yellow because it symbolizes a hope in a brighter future.
